A man has undergone emergency surgery after having a large chunk of his left leg ripped away in a shark attack on the Gold Coast yesterday.

Police said Anrija Rojcezic, 26, from Main Beach on the Gold Coast, was bitten on the calf in the attack about 2pm.

He was in a stable condition in the Gold Coast Hospital.

He had been swimming not far from a patrolled area at Main Beach when the shark attacked, Surf Life Saving Queensland development officer Peter Dawes said.
